Celtic Gaul (as France was called) was conquered by Julius Caesar in 58-51
B.C.. The Romans ruled for 500 years and later Charlemgane created a huge
empire in France. The French Revolution in 1789-93 signified the end of
Borbon monarchy. Napoleon set up the First Empire to be followed by more
monarchies and republics. France was badly hurt during World War I but
through the Treaty of Versailles it extracted lost territory (Alsace-Lorraine)
and got reparations. General Charles de Gaulle was a popular leader of
France after the war. France began to give up her colonies in Indochina in
the 1950s and in Africa during the 1960s.
During 1968, protests from students and workers led to general strikes. The
government finally conceded to increase the strikers pay. De Gaulle's
constitutional policies are followed by other leaders of France.
France is giving military support to Chad. It also lost 58 members of the
French peacekeeping force in Lebanon in a suicide terrorist attack.
France was also responsible for the sinking of the
Greenpeace environmental group's flagship, Rainbow Warrior.
